Buddhi is a Sri Lankan-born Australian artist based in Brisbane. His practice examines the interface between physical and metaphysical aspects of life and the natural world. This is informed by his early upbringing and love for the nature.
“My inspirations come from an urge to depict own struggles to finding independence and freedom and deep appreciation of the nature.”
He creates an imaginary setting with a hint of realism to depict elements of human relations and natural environment.
“I’m at a unique point in life where deep personal struggles and desired goals have culminated simultaneously, creating an invaluable opportunity to translate them in the form of art.”
Buddhi entertains irregular geometric lines and shapes to manipulate the nature of his characters that do not easily penetrate the surrounding society. He uses chaotic brushwork and other-worldly colours that resonate his somewhat turbulent thoughts and create blithesome spaces. His creative process is two-phase, such that he first layouts the subject, which is rapid and short-term and often of metaphysical nature. He then navigates on a slow and lengthy period by superimposing subject matter in the physical world.
In a nutshell,
“My upbringing taught me the value of being happy in the present, and a way of living that neither extreme contentment nor extreme misery. From the origin of a thought in the mind to its visual depiction through a painting, every step of this process takes me closer to an ultimate peaceful state.”
